Why does my footage look soft?

Because it is standard definition. DV recorded 720×576 in Europe and 720×480 in the US, and Dropframe records at those sizes so every artifact lands at the right scale. If you need a sharper file for uploading, set Resolution to 1080 in the SIZE menu — it upscales on export without changing the look.

Why is there a comb pattern on movement?

That is interlacing, and it is deliberate. DV captured two moments in time per frame, which is why camcorder footage feels immediate rather than cinematic. Choose a progressive camera — Verite, Newsroom or Lastlight — if you would rather not have it.

Why is there a column of light from bright objects?

CCD vertical smear. Every camcorder of the era did it, and Boardwalk does it hardest. Switch to Lastlight or Uplink for a cleaner image.

Can I upload straight to Instagram or TikTok?

Yes, but set Resolution to 1080 first. Social platforms re-encode low-resolution uploads far more aggressively, so a native 576-line file can arrive looking worse than the same footage upscaled beforehand.

Which format should I use?

4:3 is what every camcorder shot and is the most authentic choice. 16:9 is how DV recorded widescreen. The rest — 1:1, 9:16, 2.39:1 — are mattes for delivery; the signal chain still runs at the DV raster underneath, so the look does not change.

Zebra stripes are showing in my viewfinder

Zebra is an exposure warning, not a recording effect. It marks areas above the chosen brightness so you can judge clipping. It is drawn on the viewfinder only and never appears in the file. Turn it off under DISP.

Manual shutter will not hold

Shutter is clamped to what the camera hardware supports in the current lighting. 1/25 in bright sun may be out of range on some devices. Try adding gain or shooting in lower light.

How do I set the date stamp to a different year?

DISP → DATE STAMP → SET DATE. You can burn in any date without changing your phone's clock.
